Which coffee brewer should I buy first?

6 min read

If you want one forgiving brewer that does almost everything, get an AeroPress. If you drink milk coffee and like it strong, a moka pot or South Indian filter suits you. If you drink black coffee and enjoy a ritual, a pour-over like the Hario V60 is the most rewarding. A French press is the easiest way to make several cups.

There's no best brewer, only the best brewer for how you drink coffee. Answer two questions first: black or with milk, and one cup or several?

If you drink black coffee

Start with an AeroPress or a V60. The AeroPress is harder to get wrong. The V60 teaches you more and shines with light roasts. Try the Hoffmann V60 recipe or the Hoffmann AeroPress recipe.

If you drink milk coffee

A moka pot or South Indian filter gives you a strong concentrate that stands up to milk. Kaapi lovers should read the filter kaapi guide. An espresso machine is a bigger investment, so try a moka pot first.

If you make coffee for others

A French press scales easily. Brew four cups with almost no technique. See the French press guide.

Tip: Whatever you buy, a kitchen scale matters more than the brewer. Weighing coffee and water is the fastest way to consistent cups.

Questions

Is an AeroPress good for beginners?

Yes. It's the most forgiving common brewer, easy to clean and works with most roasts.

Can a moka pot make espresso?

Not true espresso, which needs far more pressure. It makes a strong, concentrated coffee that works very well with milk.

Do I need a gooseneck kettle?

Only for pour-over. For AeroPress, French press, moka and filter kaapi, a regular kettle is fine.

What should I get for filter kaapi?

A steel South Indian filter and a medium-dark or dark roast ground fine for filter. Blends with a little chicory are traditional, but pure coffee works too.
