Home coffee gear in India: what to buy first
7 min read
Buy in this order: a decent burr grinder, a digital scale, a forgiving brewer like an AeroPress or French press, then a kettle. Hand grinders from Timemore and 1Zpresso are widely available in India and give far better results than blade grinders. Skip fancy extras until the basics are sorted.
You don't need a café counter at home. A few well chosen tools make most of the difference, and all of them are easy to buy in India through online stores and specialty roasters.
The order to buy in
- Grinder: fresh grinding and adjustable grind matter most.
- Scale: makes every brew repeatable.
- Brewer: pick one that suits how you drink. See your first brewer.
- Kettle: a gooseneck only if you brew pour-over.
- Nice to have: timer, server, better filters, a spare brewer.
Grinders
Burr grinders crush beans to an even size. Blade grinders and mixers chop unevenly, which makes coffee taste bitter and sour at once. A good hand grinder is the best value upgrade in coffee.
| Type | Examples | Good for | Rough budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry hand grinder | Timemore C2 or C3, Hario Skerton | Pour-over, AeroPress, French press | Usually under ₹10,000 |
| Mid to high hand grinder | 1Zpresso J, JX or K series, Timemore higher models | All filter methods, some espresso | Often ₹10,000+ |
| Premium hand grinder | Comandante C40 | Filter enthusiasts | Well above ₹10,000 |
| Electric burr grinder | Various brands | Convenience, several cups a day | Varies widely |
The grind chart on this site uses the 1Zpresso K-Ultra as its reference, so settings translate easily if you own one. Prices change often, so check current listings before buying.
Brewers
| Brewer | Common options in India | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AeroPress | AeroPress Original, Go | Forgiving, portable, great first brewer |
| Pour-over | Hario V60 (plastic, ceramic, glass), Chemex | Plastic V60 is cheap and brews very well |
| French press | Hario, Bodum and many local brands | Easy multi-cup brewing |
| Moka pot | Bialetti Moka Express and others | Strong coffee for milk drinks |
| South Indian filter | Steel filters from local brands | Cheap, durable, made for kaapi |
Scales and kettles
- Scale: any digital kitchen scale reading to 1 g works. Coffee scales with a timer and 0.1 g readings, from brands like Timemore and Hario, are nicer for pour-over and espresso.
- Kettle: a regular electric kettle is fine for most methods. A gooseneck kettle gives control for pour-over, and temperature control is a luxury for light roasts.
Tip: Put your first money into the grinder, not the brewer. A plastic V60 with a good grinder beats a fancy brewer with a blade grinder every time.
What to skip at first
- Cheap espresso machines with pressurised baskets, unless you just want a quick milky drink.
- Gadgets that promise café results without a grinder.
- Buying several brewers before you've mastered one.

Questions
Is a hand grinder enough?
For one or two cups a day of filter coffee, yes. Many hand grinders grind as well as electric grinders that cost much more.
Can I make espresso with a hand grinder?
Some premium hand grinders can, like the 1Zpresso J series or K-Ultra, but it takes effort. Most entry hand grinders are made for filter.
Should I buy an espresso machine first?
Only if you mostly drink espresso-based milk drinks and have budget for a good grinder too. A moka pot is a cheaper way to start.
Where can I buy coffee gear in India?
Large online marketplaces, specialty coffee roasters and dedicated coffee equipment stores all stock the common brands. Buy from authorised sellers to avoid copies.
