Why does specialty coffee cost more?

Specialty coffee costs more because it is picked more selectively, processed more carefully, bought in smaller lots at higher prices, and roasted fresh in small batches. Rare varieties, experimental processing and micro lots cost more again because there is simply less of them.
A bag of commodity coffee and a bag of specialty coffee can come from the same hills. The difference is in how much care, labour and selection goes into every step, and how few kilos end up meeting the standard.

Why some bags cost much more
- Micro lots: a single plot or picking day, sometimes only a few hundred kilos.
- Special varieties: lower yielding plants or rarer seeds cost more to grow.
- Long fermentations and barrel ageing: time, equipment and loss.
- Awards and competition lots: limited and in demand.
- Small roasters: higher per-kilo costs than large factories.
Tip: Price per 100 g is the fair way to compare. A 250 g bag and a 1 kg bag look very different until you do the maths.

Does a higher price always mean better coffee?
No. Price reflects rarity and effort as well as quality. Plenty of excellent coffees sit in the middle of the range.
Do farmers get more money from specialty coffee?
Specialty buyers usually pay above commodity prices, and direct trade can increase that. How much reaches the farmer still varies a lot by relationship.
Why is Indian specialty coffee cheaper than imported specialty?
Imported coffee carries shipping, duties and importer margins. Indian coffee roasted in India skips most of those.
