Beyond India / Africa & Arabia
Uganda coffee
1200–2300 m · picked October to February on Mount Elgon · Mostly robusta, with highland arabica
Robusta is native to Uganda's forests, and the country is Africa's largest exporter of it. The arabica grown high on Mount Elgon and in the Rwenzori mountains is a small share, but it is what the specialty trade comes for.
- Grown in
- Mount Elgon (Bugisu), Rwenzori, West Nile
- Varieties
- SL14, SL28, Nyasaland for arabica; native robusta
- Processing
- Washed arabica on Elgon; naturals in the Rwenzoris; robusta mostly natural
In the cup: Elgon arabica: winey, chocolate, dried fruit. Rwenzori naturals: jammy. Robusta: heavy, dark chocolate, earthy.
Next to Indian coffee: A kindred origin: both countries grow far more robusta than arabica and are proud of it. Compare a Ugandan robusta with a fine Indian robusta from Coorg and the Indian one usually tastes cleaner.
