One of the city's oldest kafeneia, dating to 1839. Hans Christian Andersen passed through in 1841, an anti-monarchist newspaper was written here, and during the Occupation it was the first place in Athens to hand out food before the Gestapo took the building.

Karolos Zonaras opened this café-patisserie in 1939 after years in the United States. Sartre and de Beauvoir kept a table overlooking Panepistimiou in the 1950s, and the room reopened after a full renovation.

A café in the town's municipal garden since 1870. Eleftherios Venizelos and Nikos Kazantzakis were among its visitors, and a permanent photo exhibition tells the garden café's history.

Vassilis Varsos opened a dairy shop in central Athens in 1892, aged 16, and the family moved to Kifissia in 1922. It is still a pastry café serving yoghurt, rice pudding and cakes made the old way.
An Ottoman-era coffeehouse said to date to 1800. In 1922 George Spanoudakis, a refugee from Asia Minor, received it in exchange for the two cafés he had left behind; his great-granddaughter runs it today, and the old price list in Greek and Arabic survives.

Operating since 1840, it was the favourite of the town's doctors, lawyers and merchants. The mirrors, oval tables and sofas are by the Viennese maker Michael Thonet, and a case holds weapons from the 1821 Revolution.

A family roaster since 1923, now in its fourth generation. This is the place in Athens to watch Greek coffee made the old way: the briki is pushed through a bed of hot sand (hovoli) and served with a piece of loukoumi.

A neighbourhood café on a square in Galatsi, north of the centre, pairing single-origin coffee with croissants and cinnamon rolls baked on site. It was listed in the World's 100 Best Coffee Shops Europe ranking.
Brothers Yiannis and Ellias Taloumis started Taf as a Greek-coffee importer and roaster in the early 1990s. The café on Emmanouil Benaki opened in 2009 and is generally seen as the start of Athens' specialty scene.
