Opened in 1874, the Grand Café was where Henrik Ibsen ate lunch every day, and Amundsen, Nansen, Hamsun and the Kristiania bohemians gathered here. A restoration kept the Thonet chairs, Lars Backer's ceilings and three Per Krohg paintings.

Founded as Kaffefuglen in 1963, Fuglen took its short name after new owners arrived in 2008 and added cocktails and vintage design sales in 2010. Most of the 1950s and 60s Norwegian furniture is for sale, and the brand has since spread to Tokyo, Seoul and Jakarta.
