Jan Apolinary Michalik opened it in 1895 as the Lwów Confectionery, at first in a single windowless back room, hence 'Michalik's Den'. Art students paid for food with small artworks, and the Zielony Balonik cabaret began here in 1905.

Jan Noworolski, a confectioner from Lwów, took over the Cloth Hall café in 1910 and reopened it in 1912 with the Art Nouveau rooms that survive. Painters Malczewski and Kossak were guests; it was nationalised in 1949 and returned to the family in 1992.

Antoni Kazimierz Blikle bought a small confectionery on Nowy Świat on 11 September 1869, and the firm has stayed on the street since. Its pączki (doughnuts) are the house classic.
